2018 SmartyPants Vitamins USMS Fitness Series

Set, train for, and achieve your 2018 fitness goals with three swimming challenges!

The inaugural SmartyPants Vitamins U.S. Masters Swimming Fitness Series is a great way to reach your fitness goals through the best sport of all: swimming. Train with your local USMS club or workout group, or swim on your own and join the group for one or more of these fun fitness swimming events.

Oh, and there are only two rules: 1) There are no rules, and 2) HAVE FUN!

Fitness and Fun

If your local USMS club is hosting one of the below Fitness Challenges, you’ll have fun training for and completing the Challenge together, getting motivation from each other and your coach. If you swim on your own, you can still join a group for the Challenge! Invite your family, friends, and coworkers to join you—keep each other on task and have fun while getting fit.

Swimmers will receive exclusive discounts from our partners, sample packs from SmartyPants Vitamins, and a cool event swim cap!

Support a Great Cause

The SmartyPants Vitamins Winter Fitness Challenge is our offical annual fundraiser for the USMS Swimming Saves Lives Foundation. The SmartyPants Vitamins USMS Summer and Fall Challenges also benefit USMS SSLF, but provide additional opportunities to fundraise for your club or other organizations in your community.

Q: Where can I find a Masters Swimming club that’s participating?

A: Check our list of participating clubs or ask your local Masters coach.

Q: If there is not a Masters Swimming club in my area participating, can I swim it on my own?

A: Yes, you can certainly swim the event on your own. Or, you can always convince a friend to come swim with you and make both of your days better.

Q: Can I wear paddles or fins during the swim?

A: Yes! For any of the Fitness Series swims, you can wear gear—you can wear every piece of swim gear in your net bag if you’d like. You can swim it all one stroke or—because more friends mean more fun—swim it as a relay with other swimmers.

Q: How do I swim the Challenge as a relay?

A: Structure the relay anyway you like— by time, distance, stroke, skill level, etc. The only requirement is that all swimmers must be registered for the challenge.

Q: What’s the scoop on the training plans?

A: The training plans contain six-week swim-workout programs to prepare you for the Fitness Challenge. The workouts are written by USMS-certified coaches and cater to three different skill levels.You’ll receive a link to your training plan in the email receipt when you register. If you’re having trouble seeing or downloading the training plan, contact events@usmastersswimming.org.

Q: Where should I input my times after the swim?

A: The Fitness Series emphasis is on fun and fitness. How fast you swim or how many lengths you swim isn’t recorded. However, to gauge your fitness levels from year to year, you can record it in your personal fitness logs as a reference point for 2019’s challenges.

Q: How can I fundraise for the USMS Swimming Saves Lives Foundation or my team’s charity?

A: You can donate directly or simply share the USMS SSLF donation link set up by your club. Share your fitness goal and ask your social networks to support USMS SSLF. Be sure to sign up with a participating club and use its customized donation link, so that your donations are recorded for that club. Clubs will be recognized for participation and donations. The Winter Fitness Challenge is our USMS SSLF annual fundraiser, so all proceeds for that event go to USMS SSLF. For the Summer and Fall Fitness Challenges, your club may elect to support a local charity.

Q: I’m a coach and want to host a Fitness Series event at my pool. Where can I get more information?

Q: Does USMS host any other events in which I can participate?

A: Yes, we sanction nearly 500 pool and open water events annually including National Championships in a range of distances. And if you're looking for longer distance challenge or competitive event check out our pool National Championship, ePostal, and Open Water National Championships events.

Q: What are the health benefits of swimming?

A: Swimming is a low-impact exercise that increases circulation, increases flexibility, and lowers blood pressure. Swimming also has mood-boosting benefits and improves sleep. Learn more about the many health benefits of swimming.
